Wix robots.txt and llms.txt for AI crawlers

Wix generates both files. You edit robots.txt yourself, one user agent at a time. llms.txt is maintained for you until you edit it or turn it off. Neither file is a lock.

Short version: SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → Robots.txt Editor. Wix's own block example names CCBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and BingAI. Add any other user agent in the same shape. llms.txt is next to it, under Go to llms.txt, and it requires a custom domain. Check the page source for the price, because Wix says most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.

1. Read the file Wix is already serving

Wix's editor article says you view the file by adding /robots.txt to the root domain, for example https://www.example.com/robots.txt. The same article says the file allows search-engine bots to access the site's pages by default, with exceptions when a page is set up so that bots cannot access it. It also says a robots.txt request does not guarantee that a crawler will skip a URL.

The editing article warns that changing the file can keep the site out of search results, and that Wix Customer Care cannot help with custom robots.txt changes. Fetch the URL and keep a copy before you type. The free AI crawler & raw-HTML checker scores the user agents it knows against that file.

2. Add or remove an AI crawler

Wix's "Blocking AI crawlers" article gives this path:

  1. Go to SEO & GEO in the site dashboard.
  2. Scroll to Tools and settings.
  3. Click Robots.txt Editor.
  4. Click View File.
  5. Click the field under Your robots.txt file.
  6. Add directives under This is your current file.
  7. Click Save Changes, then Save.

The directives they publish are:

User-agent: CCBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Disallow: /

User-agent: BingAI
Disallow: /

Their tip says this list is some known crawlers, and that you can add more. Their FAQ names the same four as a starting point and says blocking specific AI crawlers should not, in their words, significantly affect SEO, while telling you to watch analytics. They also say some crawlers ignore the file, so it is not a complete block, and that blocking crawlers in robots.txt may limit NLWeb because those agents need access to the structured content.

To ask a search crawler to keep reading while GPTBot is disallowed, add that crawler's own group. Wix does not document a toggle that splits "training" from "search" for you. The pattern is the one in their example:

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Save, then open /robots.txt on the domain and see whether those groups survived next to the lines Wix already had. If you need the original file back, the editor article says Reset to Default is in the same Robots.txt Editor.

A separate control, robots meta tags, is not a crawler user-agent rule. In Studio Editor, Wix documents Pages & Menu → More Actions → SEO basics → Advanced SEO → Robots meta tag and a nosnippet checkbox "to prevent your page's content from being used as a direct input for AI overviews." Publish after you change it. That is a page meta tag. It is not the Disallow for GPTBot.

3. The generated llms.txt

Wix's llms.txt article says the file is generated and maintained for you. Before you use it, the article says to upgrade the site, connect a custom domain, and enable search-engine indexing.

  1. Go to SEO & GEO.
  2. Scroll to Tools and settings.
  3. Click Go to llms.txt.
  4. Click View File.

To hide it, use the toggle next to Use your llms.txt file. Wix calls that an opt-out.

To edit:

  1. Open Go to llms.txt as above.
  2. Open More Actions.
  3. Click Edit file, then Continue.
  4. Change the text and click Save Changes.

Wix says that once you edit the file, automatic updates stop so your changes stay. Reset to Default turns automatic updates back on. The article also says the file only includes content that is already public. It does not include password-protected or member-only content. Turning the feature off is the other way they document to limit what is in the file.

After you save, request https://your-domain/llms.txt. The checker expects HTTP 200 and a text body, not an HTML page. In our 14 Oct 2026 check, 33 of 59 responding hosts had a plain-text /llms.txt. A generated file still has to be the URL the crawler requests.

4. Prices in the HTML Wix sends

Wix's help article on viewing source the way search engines do says Wix sites use server-side rendering, and that most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. They read the HTML the server sends. The page source is that HTML, before scripts run. The article tells you to look for headings and body text, links, and images with their alt text. Anything missing from the page source is content those crawlers cannot read.

Wix's developer SEO guide says the same thing from the code side. Search bots read the HTML from the initial render. Not all of them run JavaScript later. Code in onReady() is rendered on the server and returned as HTML. If the work is asynchronous, returning that promise from onReady() is how they say you wait for it. If you do not, the promise can resolve after the server has already sent the HTML. They note that waiting has a performance cost, and they suggest waiting for the content that matters for indexing.

A price you placed on the page should be in the page source. A price that arrives only from client code after onReady() has finished can be missing. View the source, then paste the pricing URL into the checker. In that 60-site check, 29 of 46 usable homepages had no price-like text in the raw HTML.

Wix's SEO features page says SEO Settings is where you edit structured data markup, along with indexability, Open Graph tags and robots meta tags. Put that markup in the page Wix renders, then confirm the checker lists the JSON-LD types. The developer guide's point still applies: structured data added only in the browser, after the initial HTML, is not what a non-JavaScript crawler reads.

5. Verify

  1. Open /robots.txt and check the GPTBot group against the groups you saved.
  2. Open /llms.txt if the toggle is on.
  3. View source on the pricing page and look for the price string.
  4. Paste both URLs into the checker.
